TO SUPPORT ITS STRONG GROWTH, E-TRONICS SETTLES IN LAVAL

The high-tech company chose Laval because of a number of strategic reasons,
and has created 22 jobs following its move to the city

Laval, May 9, 2012 – A designer and manufacturer of customized electronic systems since 2007, E-Tronics now has a home in Laval. The high-tech company decided to locate itself in the area in order to be able to expand its facilities and make the addition of a new production line featuring high-precision equipment, all of which necessitated a $1.7 million investment. The high-tech company chose Laval because of a number of strategic reasons.

E-Tronics’ new headquarters is 100,000 square feet in size, more than twice as big as its previous facilities. As a result of adding a shift to increase its production capability, the company has created 22 new jobs in Laval, which brings its total number of employees to 60. Such measures proved to be necessary in order to support the strong growth of the organization, whose customers are mainly from the health, transportation, telecommunications, aerospace and defense industries.

Many factors contributed to the company management’s decision to move to Laval. As Hossein Samimi, President and CEO of E-Tronics explains, “It is a strategic location for us in that it allows us to be closer to our customers. Moreover, our employees are able to find affordable housing and a better quality of life in Laval. Having happy employees and the kinds of transportation facilities we need, whether in terms of public transit or access to major highways, makes it much easier for us to recruit and retain staff. Another not insignificant consideration has been the very warm welcome we have received from all the economic partners in the area.”

Laval is therefore now home to a company that truly has the wind in its sails. For example, E-Tronics recently entered into a strategic two-year agreement with the medical device manufacturer Lamda. The two companies will jointly produce mobile monitors designed for the health sector both here in Quebec and around the world. Furthermore, E-Tronics runs a centre for creativity and innovation in which, together with such major customers as Hydro-Québec, Bombardier Transportation and the City of Quebec, it carries out research and development activities to create advanced, high-value-added products.

Among them are a public lighting system the company designed for the City of Quebec that is highly energy-efficient and allows for reduced management time. It also manufactures the Hydra tankless water heater system for Hydro-Québec, which earned E-Tronics an award from Home Depot at the Innovation for Sustainability event held last November in Toronto. E-Tronics’ recognized expertise has also led its management to work together actively with TechnoMontréal, Greater Montreal’s information and communications technologies cluster.

Jean-Marie Pressé, Director of LAVAL TECHNOPOLE’s e-POLE, is delighted that such a dynamic company has come to Laval. “It demonstrates that our industrial parks and availability of specialized workers meets the needs of companies manufacturing complex, high-value-added products. E-Tronics joins the other excellent Laval businesses involved in the making of semi-conductors and electrical and electronic components for the aeronautics, energy, health, multimedia and other markets. Manufacturing concerns, in fact, count for more than 11% of Laval’s information and communications technologies sector.”

E-Tronics management’s vision, combined with its market development and acquisition strategies, enable it to foresee sales growth in the order of 45% over the next three years, mainly through targeting the U.S. and European markets. International sales already account for fully 70% of the company’s revenues.

Laval, April 23, 2012 – Once again, Laval has confounded expectations; the results for 2011 have again surpassed the primary indicators. This was achieved despite a difficult global economic environment.

INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL SECTORS IN 2011: LAVAL’S LEADERSHIP CONFIRMED
It should be recalled that 2010 was an excellent year for new industrial projects. Despite an economic environment characterized by uncertainty, Laval performed even better in 2011, evidence of the city’s attractiveness and the soundness of the strategy it has pursued over the years. No fewer than 41 new projects broke ground in Laval, generating $104 million in investments, up 176% from 2010. These projects also created 825 new jobs. Commercial investments in Laval also rose in 2011, up 12.5% for the year, with over 296 new commercial projects enhancing the quality and diversity of commerce in Laval.

GROWTH OF THE AGROPOLE: THE BIG SURPRISE IN 2011
Economic development in Laval is structured by the AGROPOLE, the BIOPOLE, the e-POLE, the INDUSTRIAL POLE and the LEISURE AND TOURISM POLE. However, the big surprise in 2011 was investments in the AGROPOLE, which jumped from over $6.3 million in 2010 to over $112 million in 2011. This sector’s success was in part due to a new bridge that opened on Highway 25, allowing Laval to attract many distribution centres that needed easier access to the port of Montreal and the metropolitan region’s highway system. Investment in the e-POLE, which consists of all businesses active in information technology and communications (ITC), grew over 107% from 2010. This pole is clearly becoming increasingly mature, as a critical mass of strong businesses takes shape. These businesses are sure to make a strong contribution to technopolitan development in the years to come.

Laval, April 19, 2012 – A few months ago, the Province of Padua expressed its interest in establishing exchange and cooperation links with the City of Laval in three strategic areas: market and investment development, education and tourism. Since these three economic issues are also priorities for Laval, negotiations led to the March 15 signing of an important protocol with the Italian province.

Said Mr. Gilles Vaillancourt, Mayor of Laval: “For several years, Laval has devoted many resources to developing international relationships. We are indeed convinced that, in the face of today’s globalization, the growth and prosperity of companies, regions and nations rest largely on going global.”

Mr. Pierre Desroches, President and Executive Director of LAVAL TECHNOPOLE, welcomes such an initiative. “We have much in common, and perhaps plenty to share, with the Province of Padua. Quebec and Padua, which is mainly composed of SMBs (about 93.7% of the firms have one to nine employees), have similar economic structures. This is a solid foundation for understanding our respective business cultures and establishing lasting, profitable relationships.”

Padua today...Europe tomorrow
This protocol will enable Laval businesses and institutions to network with their counterparts in Padua. But more importantly, it will open the doors of the European Union since the province is Europe’s second-largest logistics platform in terms of exports. This protocol also falls under the free trade agreement that the Harper government is negotiating with the European Union.

In the coming months, the LAVAL TECHNOPOLE International Business Centre will establish close ties with industry associations, chambers of commerce and export and innovation promotion government agencies to maximize the business opportunities for Laval companies.

The Province of Padua is the economic driver of the Veneto region. The region has 934,000 inhabitants and 94,000 companies, mainly in agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing, construction and wholesale and retail trade. Machinery, industrial equipment, boats and aquatic crafts are some of its main imports.

A popular tourist destination
The province is well known internationally for its tourist attractions, particularly because it is part of the Veneto. Indeed, Padua is located 30 km from Venice. Veneto annually receives approximately 20 million tourists and has 65 million overnight stays (2011 data). The thermal water spas and vineyards of Euganean Hills are the top tourist attractions. The region has 272 hotels.

Building a special relationship with the province can only benefit Laval. Many avenues were explored in this respect. For instance, we plan mutually promote our tourist areas, export Laval tourist attractions to Padua and make Laval “the place to be” for Paduan citizens who visit Quebec.

Focus on education and knowledge
In terms of education, the province has the world’s second oldest university, the University of Padua, founded in 1222. It has just signed a memorandum of understanding with Université INRS, which will lead to dual graduation programs recognized by both parties, exchanges between professors and students and joint research projects through European funds.

This agreement will also allow other Laval institutions to organize exchanges with educational institutions in the Province of Padua. Indeed, several institutions have already expressed interest in establishing ties with Collège Montmorency and École Hôtelière de Laval. These ties could take the form of student, faculty and/or intern exchanges.

The Veneto region has 4 universities, 24 faculties and 108,000 students. The region is also eighth in the world for high school student knowledge and skills in science and mathematics.

In short, the memorandum of understanding between Laval and Padua represents a significant milestone in the globalization of Laval companies, explained Mr. Desroches. “Thanks to the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation, export organizations in Laval and Padua can benefit from a business framework that will facilitate relationships between companies and institutions. This agreement is, in a way, a bridge between the two regions that will act as a springboard for business.”, says Ms. Véronique Proulx, Director, LAVAL TECHNOPOLE International Business Centre:

Madeco puts the final touches on Place 440

Laval, March 29, 2012 – Madeco, a property developer with a 15-year business history is just putting the final touches on the Place 440 project, a brand new 45,000-square-foot commercial premises that offers now offices for rent in a strategic sector of Laval.

Situated in the south corridor of Highway 440 West at the corner of Lucien-Allier street, Place 440 is designed as a multipurpose site suitable for a wide range of commercial purposes. With 500- to 8,000-square-foot rooms on two floors, 10- to 14-foot ceilings and the possibility of renting storage areas, Place 440 can meet the wide range of needs of entrepreneurs in the region.

Its high architectural and construction standards ensure exceptional quality for business heads and their employees. A modern design, large opening windows and the possibility of integrating a kitchen with access to terraces and balconies are just some of the features of this new complex.

Quality has always been the defining characteristic of this developer. Having made its reputation in residential construction, Madeco won the 2010 Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the Qualité Habitation Gala, as well as taking honours in the 2011 edition of the same Gala in the “Residential Complex of the Year" category for the Royal St-Martin project in Laval. On the strength of these successes, Madeco decided to offer its expertise to the business community with Place 440.

Pierre Desroches, President and Chief Executive of LAVAL TECHNOPOLE, is delighted by the developer’s new initiative: “This new building fits perfectly into the region's property offering for a demanding clientele that is increasingly looking for facilities that can adapt to changing needs."
